Acid reflux surgery, a ray of hope for severe heartburn patients


The cases of acid reflux are rising at an alarming rate in the United States. Acid reflux is not often considered as a serious health condition by the majority of the people. Normally people turn to prescription drugs or some over-the-counter pills to fight the heartburn condition, which offers temporary relief.

Heartburn and the other complications that come with acid reflux are difficult to treat. Though there is a surgical option available for severe acid reflux cases, it’s complicated and not often preferred b the most around the world.

But good news for the acid reflux patients is that a new acid reflux surgery showing some promise in treating acid reflux effectively.

FDA, the Food and Drug Administration of United States, is now looking at an acid reflux surgery that offers a permanent relief to the heartburn, and other acid reflux conditions.

In this new acid reflux surgery, a band of magnetic beads is wrapped around the end of esophagus. This device works same as the lower esophageal sphincter, allows only down flow of the food from esophagus into the stomach. It stops the backflow of the acids, and food content into the esophagus thus minimizing the heartburn.

“I can eat anything in the world I want. I mean anything,” said a GERD (acid reflux) patient who has been suffering from it for the past 20 years, who was recently operated on an experimental basis.

This device has already got good marks from an FDA advisory committee, and waiting to get the green signal from the FDA.
